EXPLORE

Seafront Location

Let your senses revel in the sounds, smells and views of the Southern Ocean. Located one hour south of Adelaide on the beautiful coastline of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula, Yelki by the Sea sits directly opposite Wright Island at Encounter Bay. Take a few steps to the beach or pathway leading to The Bluff and on via the Heysen Trail; or with a bike follow the pathway into Victor Harbor and along the coast to Port Elliot, Goolwa and the Murray Mouth.

A short amble along the beachfront you will find The Beach House Cafe (delicious gourmet pizza or curry),

Pa's Fish Cafe and the ever popular Yilki Store.  And, a fifteen minute walk along the path in the other direction to have a great dining experience at Whalers.

Romance

A common comment in our guest book is that people would like to return and many do, repeatedly.
Come and experience for yourself the reasons why our guests say the wonderful heartfelt things they do about
their time at Yelki by the Sea.

Heritage & History

This property holds an important place in South Australian history. The cottage, its attic, and a separate building of
two rooms above the cellar were built in the early 1830's by Cornish whalers and sealers that came over from
Kangaroo Island, and are reminiscent of buildings you find in Cornwall, England. Thick stone walls, use of substantial wooden beams above big open fireplaces, low ceilings and even lower doorways, gives a sense of permanence. In the 1840's the property was extended significantly becoming the Fountain Inn in 1847, a haven for whalers and travellers.

Some local dining spots we frequent ...

The Beach House Cafe is a mere 1 minute stroll along the beachfront from Yelki by the Sea and has a great ambience. They offer fantastic woodfired pizzas and authentic North Indian curries. No problem with overindulging as you can just amble back.

Whalers sits at the base of the Bluff and is a 15 minute walk along the beachfront. It's a lovely restaurant with an open deck where you can sit and look over the water. It's open for coffee, breakfast and lunch (7 days) and dinner (Thurs, Fri & Sat).

Qahwa on Bridge Terrace in town. A lot to love about this place - very casual atmosphere and they offer a great coffee and good food.

Swagman Chargrill at Softfoot Farm, Hindmarsh Valley (15 mins drive) – a favourite with top class food, service and lovely views  Phone: 0400 983 922

Slightly further afield there are wonderful dining experiences for every taste from D’arenberg Cube or D’Arry’s at McLaren Vale to Port Elliot with the Flying Fish overlooking beautiful Horseshoe Bay or Thunderbird on The Strand, to Goolwa with Bombora on the River or Kuti's on the beach.
