EXPLORE

Seafront Location

Let your senses revel in the sounds, smells and views of the Southern Ocean. Located one hour south of Adelaide on the beautiful coastline of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula, Yelki by the Sea sits directly opposite Wright Island at Encounter Bay. Take a few steps to the beach or pathway leading to The Bluff and on via the Heysen Trail; or with a bike follow the pathway into Victor Harbor and along the coast to Port Elliot, Goolwa and the Murray Mouth.

A short amble along the beachfront you will find The Beach House Cafe (delicious gourmet pizza or curry), and the

ever-popular Yilki Store.  A fifteen minute walk along the path in the other direction to have a great dining experience at Whalers Seaside Dining.

Romance

A common comment in our guest book is that people would like to return and many do, repeatedly.
Come and experience for yourself the reasons why our guests say the wonderful heartfelt things they do about
their time at Yelki by the Sea.

Heritage & History

This property holds an important place in South Australian history. The cottage, its attic, and a separate building of
two rooms above the cellar were built in the early 1830's by Cornish whalers and sealers that came over from
Kangaroo Island, and are reminiscent of buildings you find in Cornwall, England. Thick stone walls, use of substantial wooden beams above big open fireplaces, low ceilings and even lower doorways, gives a sense of permanence. In the 1840's the property was extended significantly becoming the Fountain Inn in 1847, a haven for whalers and travellers.

A few local dining spots we frequent ...

The Beach House Cafe is a mere 1 minute stroll along the beachfront from Yelki by the Sea and has a great ambience. They offer fantastic woodfired pizzas and authentic North Indian curries. No problem with overindulging as you can just amble back. Closed Mondays.

Whalers Seaside Dining on Franklin Parade sitting at the base of the Bluff and a 15-minute walk along the beachfront from Yelki. A great relaxed restaurant with an open deck to sit and look out over the water. Open Wednesday to Sunday for coffee/cake, breakfast or lunch plus dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The Larder Kitchen on Esplanade in Victor Harbor.  A firm favourite - excellent modern Australian cuisine – food, wine, cocktails, coffee – offer lunch and dinner – closed Tuesdays.

Qahwa on Bridge Terrace in Victor Harbor. A lot to love about this place - very casual beach atmosphere and they offer a great coffee and good food. Open 7 days.

Lost Phoenix Farm Hindmarsh Valley (10-15 mins drive) Beautiful food - the menu was created with the intention of being shared and changes with the seasons – open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday plus dinner on Friday and Saturday.

Swagman Country Dining at Softfoot Alpaca Farm, Hindmarsh Valley (15-20 mins drive) – top food, service and lovely views. Open for lunch 7 days.

Slightly further afield there are wonderful experiences for every taste. Perhaps a visit to d’Arenberg Cube or d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant at McLaren Vale or to Port Elliot to the Flying Fish overlooking stunning Horseshoe Bay or staying on the coast a visit to Goolwa with Bombora on the River or Kuti Shack on the beach.
